Manchester City Council has outlined its vision for the regeneration of Holt Town.
A six-week consultation is expected to kick off later this summer on a development framework for the east Manchester neighbourhood, which has the potential to deliver up to 4,500 homes alongside 15 acres of public realm and green spaces.
Investment in new commercial space will also see the creation of around 1,500 new local full-time jobs. Proposals include introduction of new health and education services for the community.
The masterplan is expected to transform the area from a post-industrial to modern urban district while preserving the existing heritage buildings and canal waterways.
Earlier this year, Studio Egret West was chosen to lead on the development of the neighbourhood regeneration plan.
The move is an extension of the ongoing regeneration in Ancoats and New Islington. The latter began in 2002 with a view to delivering up to 2,000 new homes alongside commercial spaces featuring eateries, shops, and bars.
Plans to enhance Ancoats found broad support last year, with the council agreeing to provide more than £30m of funding for the construction of some 1,500 homes and improvements to green space.
Holt Town regeneration is expected to build on the success of Ancoats and New Islington and will transform 74 acres of brownfield land into a link between Manchester’s city centre and Sports City and the Etihad Campus in east Manchester.
Bev Craig, leader of the council, said: “Holt Town will drive innovation, create new jobs and support population growth, new green spaces, and a new era for urban renewal in Manchester.”
