The University of Manchester has gained planning consent for AMPPS – a £25m building that will unify the institution’s astronomy, mathematics, physics, and photon science departments.
The design of the 182,000 sq ft building will produce a landmark building on the northern boundary of the university campus.
The mathematics and astronomy departments will be linked by a four-storey atrium space.
On the top floor a glazed bridge links to the third finger of accommodation and extends over the pedestrian route through to University Place.
An over sailing roof unifies the three fingers acting as both a suspension system for solar shading louvres and host for roof level plant screening and photovoltaic panels.
