Manchester worried over escalating cost of 2002 Games

Manchester is fighting to ensure that its staging of the 2002 Commonwealth Games does not turn into a public relations and financial disaster.

The biggest expenditure will be the new 50,000-seater stadium and sports complex at the heart of a regeneration project east of Manchester.

There are concerns about escalating costs which have risen from the £58.5m originally envisaged to a latest estimate of £70m.
