Manor house with war history thrust into the limelight

A manor house in which Winston Churchill spent many hours during World War II is to be one of the 63 properties due to go under the hammer at Strettons’ February sale.

Rowfant House, near Crawley, West Sussex, parts of which date back to the 15th century, is set in 22.5 acres of land, and comes complete with a fishing lake, walled garden and streams. The property was once owned by English poet Frederick Locker-Lampson and was requisitioned by the Ministry of Defence during WWII before being bought in 1962 by the Latvian Church. It has in recent years been used as a care home and wedding venue. It has a guide price of in excess of £1.5m.

The auction will take place on 20 February at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms, Great Queen Street, WC2.
