MAPIC 2010: Scoin chain announces plans for 60 stores in the UK

South African-based coin shop specialist, Scoin, has said it is looking for up to 60 stores in the UK over the next few years. The chain is short-listed for Best International Retailer at the MAPIC Awards, supported by Estates Gazette, which are being held in Cannes tonight.

The retailer, which has 25 stores in South Africa, already has two UK stores in Westfield and Bluewater, but wants to expand the chain. Chairman Alan Demby, said he sees potential in the UK, and is looking  for sites in major cities, with shopping centres and airports. He has already looked at opening in Stratford City.

“We are going to focus on London intially before before rolling the chain out to the rest of the UK.”  Demby added: “We want to do for coins what McDonald’s did for burgers, and what Starbucks did for coffee.”

Scoin looks for premises of around 600 sq ft.
