Marble Arch tourist mound approved

Plans for a 25m-high temporary mound at Marble Arch, W1, have gained unanimous consent from Westminster City Council.

The Marble Arch Hill installation will run for six months until the autumn. The artificial landmark forms part of the council’s Oxford Street district framework, which aims to attract shoppers back to the West End as lockdown restrictions are eased.

Kay Buxton, chief executive of Marble Arch London BID, said: “Westminster City Council’s planning committee decision to approve the construction of Marble Arch Hill is just what the doctor ordered as London’s retail, hotel and hospitality businesses start their recovery from the devastating effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We will now be working closely with our member businesses and the organisers of Marble Arch Hill to ensure the attraction provides the best economic support for the district, as we continue to look at new ways of connecting businesses and increasing footfall and dwell time to ensure we remain one of London’s prime commercial locations.”
