A new report highlighting regional competitiveness shows London asheading the league in wages, labour productivity in manufacturing and thecreation of new businesses.
The study is the first of a regular series to be published by theDepartment of Trade and Industry. It comes at a time of something of a powerstuggle between trade and industry secretary Margaret Beckett and deputyprime minister John Prescott.
Mr Prescott has been given charge of Labour’s plans for English regionaldevelopment agencies. However Ms Beckettt is reluctant to surrender any rolein the regions.
