Mark Carney to face MPs’ questions over future at Bank of England

Mark Carney will be questioned by MPs today over whether he plans to extend his term as governor of the Bank of England as concerns mount that the uncertainty is damaging its credibility.

He will face the Treasury select committee for the first time since reports emerged that the 53-year-old Canadian is considering staying in his post for longer than planned to help to navigate Britain’s economy through its departure from the European Union.

Carney originally planned to serve only five years of a maximum eight-year term as governor when he was appointed in 2013, but in October 2016 he agreed to stay an extra year until June 2019, three months after the UK formally leaves the EU.
