Market wrap: Berkeley tops FTSE 100 real estate risers

London stocks have recovered some of their losses after Monday’s falls. The FTSE 100 finished Tuesday trading at 6,881, up 0.5% over the day, while the FTSE 250 rose by 0.8% to 22,119.

In the blue chip index, Berkeley Group posted the biggest real estate rise, with its stock up 3.2% at 4,744p.

Other housebuilders posting gains included Countryside (+3.2%), Crest Nicholson (+2.8%) and Redrow (+2.3%).

National House Building Council statistics today showed new starts rising to a 14-year high of 46,452), their highest  since the global financial crisis.

In the FTSE 250, the best performing real estate stock was Hammerson, up 3.5% at 35.59p.
