Market wrap: Housebuilders rally despite FTSE 100 slide

The housebuilders led the FTSE 100’s biggest risers today, defying the otherwise downbeat market.

Persimmon topped the risers in the index after posting a near-50% rise in average weekly private sales per site since the start of July. Its shares rose 8% to 2,822p.

Barratt Developments and Berkeley Group Holdings also ended the day higher.

Barratt was up 2.49%, at 534.3p, while Berkeley traded up 0.99% to finish the day at 4,698p.

The FTSE 100 ended the session down 0.83% at 6,076.62 points, while the FTSE 250 nudged down by 0.84% to 17,623.02.
