Market wrap: Housebuilders rise in FTSE 100

Two of the UK’s largest housebuilders have entered the bank holiday weekend on a high after making the list of the biggest risers in the FTSE 100 index.

Taylor Wimpey was up 2% to 122.5p, while Barratt Developments edged up 1.7% to 525.20p.

Meanwhile, Premier Inn owner Whitbread checked in at 2,529p, up 2.93%, as hotel operators gear up for the three-day weekend ahead.

Retail REITs including Shaftesbury and Capital & Counties also closed trading on the up. Shaftesbury inched up 2.82% from 502p to 529p, while Capital & Counties scooted up 2.21% from 128.4p to 129.4p.

The FTSE 100 ended the day down 0.61% at 5,963.57. The FTSE 250 was 0.15% up at 17,788.33.
