Market wrap: REITs defy downbeat market

The UK’s largest REITs and listed real estate companies defied a generally downbeat market today with some of the largest rises in both the FTSE 100 and 250.

Landsec, SEGRO and British Land led the charge as the top risers on the FTSE 100, up by 1.82%, 1.8% and 1.71%, respectively.

In the FTSE 250, Workspace Group surged by 8.47% to 576.5p and Shaftesbury was up by 5.34%.

Derwent and Big Yellow were also among the top 10 risers, alongside Great Portland Estates, which rose by 3.55% after clinching £150m in debt to back post-Covid acquisitions.

Mike Ashley’s Frasers topped the FTSE 250, surging by 13.34% to 346.6p, despite reporting a 20% dip in profits for the year ended 26 April. It saw increases in revenues and promised further cutbacks with the potential for future store closures.

The FTSE 100 fell by 1.61% to 6,013.34 and the FTSE 250 was down by 0.5% at 17,496.43.
