Market wrap: Shaftesbury and Hammerson gain amid hopes of footfall recovery

Shaftesbury was among the FTSE 250’s biggest property risers today, amid hopes of further recovery in footfall in the West End next month.

The landlord said visitors were returning to the area over the summer, and predicted further improvements as people returned to work in September.

Shaftesbury also announced that CBRE would be its sole managing agent across its entire portfolio this morning. Shares rose by 1.3% to 649p today.

The biggest real estate gains were made by Hammerson, which earlier this week announced that it had completed improvements to its Grand Central shopping centre in Birmingham. Shares in the landlord rose by 2.5% to 34.7p.

On the FTSE 100, British Land rose by 1.6% to 528.8p, and Landsec was up by 0.6% to 720p. SEGRO fell by 0.5% to 1,267p.

The FTSE 100 ended the day up 0.3% at 7,148.7 points, and the FTSE 250 was up 0.5% at 23,994 points.
