Stock markets around the world rallied today after pharmaceutical group Pfizer announced that its vaccine for Covid-19 has a 90% success rate in preventing the virus.
In London, the FTSE 100 rose by 4.7% to 6,186 points, a three-month high, while the FTSE 250 gained 5.2% at 18,850, its highest level since before the UK entered its first Covid-19 lockdown in March.
British Land and Landsec both made the day’s list of the top risers in the FTSE 100, each rising by roughly a fifth to five-month highs of 454p and 643.4p respectively. Taylor Wimpey was also up by almost a fifth, at 146.25p.
The sharpest real estate rise of the day came from estate agency Countrywide, which confirmed a takeover approach from rival Connells that could lead to a 250p a share offer. Its shares shot up by 41% to close at 205p, their highest since mid-March.
The best performance among the REITs was from Hammerson, shares in which gained 37% to reach 23.48p.
