Marks & Spencer are experimenting with food-only stores and have bought the freehold of a former Budgen supermarket in north London for their first “neighbourhood” shop.
The supermarket, in Bishops Walk, Pinner, has a total area of over 16,000 sq ft with a sales area of 9,400 sq ft — about the same as the food departments in existing M&S stores. It will carry a wide range of St Michael foods and wines, plus flowers and house plants, and there is parking for 200 cars next door.
M&S plan to test the formula in up to a dozen locations, and are looking for sites in upmarket suburban neighbourhoods within London’s M25 belt. Other towns that do not currently carry the full M&S food range are also being considered.
Prevenzer & Co advised M&S and the vendors were represented by Guinea Properties.
