The 19-acre scheme, which has been designed by EDAW, will be home to several educational institutions including Newcastle University Research Institute, Newcastle College’s new school of Applied Sciences, a 37,670 sq ft business hub and facilities for small start-up science companies.

There will also be 215,285 sq ft of student accommodation, 96 houses, 93 flats and 10,760 sq ft of leisure and retail facilities.

Newcastle Science City, a joint venture between One NorthEast, Newcastle council and Newcastle University are backing the development.

Outline planning permission will be applied for in 2009 and once full consent has been secured a developer will be appointed.

Work is scheduled to begin on site in 2010.
