Mayor of London Boris Johnson has given the go-ahead for a £175m Garden Bridge to be built across the River Thames.
Work on the Garden Bridge could begin next year. The Thomas Heatherwick-designed bridge will measure 366m across the river and be up to 30m wide, featuring 270 trees of 45 different species.
Approval follows Westminster city council and Lambeth council also giving the nod for the the Garden Bridge Trust plans.
Johnson said: “The Garden Bridge will provide a fantastic new landmark for London whilst supporting regeneration and economic growth on both sides of the Thames. It will create a stunning oasis of tranquillity in the heart of our city and boost our plans to encourage walking in the city.”
Deputy mayor for planning Sir Edward Lister added: “We have worked hard with both local authorities and the Garden Bridge Trust to ensure that the bridge is of the very highest standard of design while remaining fully accessible to those who work, live in and visit the city.”
Transport for London and the Treasury have committed £30m each, with the remainder of the cost made up of private donations.
