London mayor Ken Livingstone this week launched the London Planning Awards, which will honour the crème de la crème of the capital’s planning industry.
London First’s Kate Vandermeer, who is spearheading the project, said that the awards aimed to “recognise excellence and showcase examples which are leading the urban renaissance in London”.
Vandermeer said it would boost the profile and morale of the profession.
As well as the mayor, London First chairman Stephen O’Brien and Vincent Goodstadt, president of the RTPI, will judge the entries.
The entries are:
- best public sector planner or planning organisation – sponsored by GVA Grimley
- best private sector planner or planning organisation – sponsored by Lovells
- best planning project or development contributing to London’s future – sponsored by Berwin Leighton Paisner
- best community or partnership initiative – sponsored by St George
- and the Mayor’s Award, for best overall entrant
The awards, jointly run by the mayor, London First and the RTPI, will be presented on 3 December 2003 in a ceremony at City Hall.
Livingstone said: “Good planning has the power to transform communities and their environments.
“The best planners use imagination and an innovative approach to achieve results that can be truly inspiring.
“It is right that these achievements are recognised and rewarded and I am delighted to support these awards.”
