The mayor of London Boris Johnson has announced three further housing zones that will fast-track development in the boroughs of Brent, Westminster and Sutton.
Nearly £44m will be invested in the three zones which will together provide nearly 6,600 new homes alongside improved transport links, 13,000 construction jobs and new retail precincts.
Eighteen of 20 housing zones across London have now been announced, bringing the total number of homes to be built to 50,965 – a key target for the initiative – of which nearly one-third will be affordable to buy or rent. Two further zones will be confirmed by the late summer.
Johnson said: “We have worked very hard to reach our goal of 50,000 homes, and we have done it with two more housing zones to go.
“This scheme has proven extremely popular with boroughs, which have clearly been looking for just that extra bit of assistance in revving up their house building to answer clear demand from Londoners.”
The Edgware Road housing zone in Westminster will provide 1,113 new homes, of which 537 will be affordable, while the Alperton Housing Zone in Brent, situated on the north side of the Grand Union Canal, will deliver more than 3,213 homes. Sutton town centre and Hackbridge Housing Zone will bring forward a range of different housing.
