Alfred McAlpine and CDC Craig Ltd have applied for planning consent for a £150m leisure, retail and hotel development at East Croydon station.
The joint venture company, known as Croydon-Gateway Development Company Ltd (CGDC), has exchanged contracts with the Receivers of Cardwool Ltd (Rosehaugh) and British Railways Board to buy the 2.59ha (6.4 acre) site. Alfred McAlpine chief executive Oliver Whitehead, has been appointed Chairman of the new company.
The plans comprise 139,350 sq m (1.5m sq ft) of leisure space including:
- a “Real Snow” Ski Slope Facility
- a multiplex
- a leisure and family entertainment centre
- restaurant and bars
- leisure-style retail
- a 200 bed hotel
- a swimming pool
- a night-club.
Roger Oldfield of KPMG, one of the receivers, said: “This site has been vacant for over 30 years and having identified the potential for a regional leisure complex, we are delighted to have concluded satisfactory terms with Alfred McAlpine and CDC Craig.
CDC Craig’s Peter Allen said: “Our scheme will be financed from private funding sources and will provide a substantial boost to theTown. We are confident that the proposals will be acceptable within the planning guidelines which encourages this type of town centre development and teh attempt to rejuvenate down-town areas. This project will enhance the role fo Croydon Town Centre as a destination for entertainment, social, cultural and community activities.”
