McDonald’s has a beef with UK planning system

The boss of the McDonald’s UK division has become the latest business leader to air his gripes about the nation’s planning system.

Alistair Macrow, the fast food giant’s UK chief executive, has said that increasingly onerous bureaucracy and planning red tape was threatening to disrupt its expansion plans in Britain.

A nationwide shortage of planning officers and extra considerations that developers now have to account for, particularly in relation to the environment, has lengthened the planning process for a typical McDonald’s restaurant by more than a year compared with before the pandemic, Macrow said.
