British Land is to invest £50m in the expansion and refurbishment of the Meadowhall Shopping Centre near Sheffield.
The amount of retail space in the Market Street area of the scheme will be doubled with the creation of a 60,000 sq ft mezzanine floor in the former Sainsbury’s unit .
Other features of the redevelopment, due for completion in 2007, include a glazed atrium-style roof with improved access links to the High Street, incorporating the frontage of a new WH Smith store.
Potential occupiers for the new units on the mezzanine floor have not been confirmed but announcements are expected shortly.
Ian Middleton, Director of Meadowhall’s letting agents, Smith Young said: “The scheme is a superb opportunity to re-organise the space we have to better effect, to improve the retail offer, the shopping environment and hence the attraction of Meadowhall.
“Working with owner British Land, it is our general responsibility to try to achieve the best representation of retailers in space that is most suitable and this project will help considerably.”
