MEPS to seek EC support for Hualon plant in Antrim, Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland’s three Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will seek support of the European Commission for the proposed £157m investment by Hualon in Antrim. It is being opposed by textile manufactures who fear it would displace jobs.

The European Court decided to approve an offer of a £61m grant towards the scheme from the UK government in December. The textile manufacturers will appeal this.

MEPs Ian Paisley, John Hume and Jim Nicholson fear a further legal challenge could force the Taiwanese textile manufacturer to look elsewhere.
