Metrolink wins consent for extension to Manchester Airport

Local Transport Minister John Watts today announced Government approval for the extension of the Manchester Metrolink from Trafford Bar to Manchester Airport. A public inquiry into the proposed extension ran from June to September 1995.

The extension will provide a link from the city centre to Manchester airport and serve residential areas along the route such as Chorlton cum Hardy and Wythenshawe.

Metrolink currently operates between Bury and Altrincham via Manchester city centre. Construction of the extension will now depend on funds from private and public sector sources.

Commenting on the decision, Sponsor Minister for Manchester Alastair Burt said: “The building of a second runway at Manchester Airport will be a big boost for the city and the North West. This is just one of the many infrastructure improvements that are being planned to deal with this expansion.
