Michael resigns from Welsh assembly

Alun Michael has resigned as first secretary of the Welsh assembly pre-empting a vote of no confidence.

He had been expected to step down temporarily after an opposition confidence vote over European funds for Objective 1 status. Rhodri Morgan will be nominated to succeed him.

The Financial Times points out that South Wales has enjoyed a revival spurred by billions of pounds of inward investment. This has particularly transformed the area in and around Cardiff. However, the prosperity has been slow to spread to the Valleys and rural areas to the north and west.
