Middlesbrough council has drawn up plans to revitalise the derelict area around Middlesbrough Dock, a 116-acre site about seven minutes’ walk from the town centre.
The outline scheme, drawn up by planning consultants Shepheard, Epstein & Hunter, would convert the dock into a series of basins linked by canals. Housing, offices, workshops, leisure and educational facilities are suggested for the site.
The dock, which has 11 quays, was closed in 1980 and is currently owned by the Tees & Hartlepool Port Authority.
Middlesbrough are negotiating to acquire it, and estimate that basic works will cost £17m. A Land Reclamation Grant is being sought.
