Midlands Engine pulling in developers

The Midlands Engine and Northern Powerhouse are showing their pulling power for developers, clearly exceeding growth elsewhere.

Developers are more likely to invest in a powerhouse or an engine than the rest of the UK, with interest speeding since the announcement of the Brexit vote.

One in every four major planning applications lodged in the UK landed in the Midlands Engine in the six months from February to July this year, equating to 2,100 applications and a 3.3% rise on the previous six months.

This compares with more than 1,600 in the Northern Powerhouse (up 4.4%), outstripping growth of 2.9% in the rest of the country excluding London.

Developers piled their cash into hotels and retail and leisure schemes in the Midlands Engine but turned away from offices in sharp contrast with other regions where offices registered the greatest growth.
