Miller Developments and Ballast Wiltshier have been selected as preferred developers of the 20.2ha (50 acre) Morfa stadium site in Swansea, south Wales.
Other developers on Swansea council’s shortlist included Richardson Developments/Carrillion, Alfred McAlpine, Heron International/Sellar Property Group, JJ Gallagher, Morrison Developments and St Modwen.
Outline consent exists for 27,870 sq m (300,000 sq ft) of retail and leisure facilities around a 25,000-seat stadium for Swansea’s football and rugby clubs. An existing 1,000-seat athletic stadium will be relocated as part of the site’s redevelopment.
Nick Harris, director at Miller Developments, said: “This situation has been very tense, the competition was tough. We deliberately chose a contractor with a proven track record in developing stadiums – Ballast Wiltshier’s expertise is essential.”
Miller and Ballast will now work with Swansea council on the masterplan and submit a detailed application within four months. Work could start on site by the end of the year, with completion by the end of 2001.
Ramsdens advised the JV, while Donaldson’s represented Swansea council.
