Millions consider down-sizing

Nearly half of those aged 65 and over are considering moving to a smaller property, according to McCarthy & Stone’s annual retirement confidence index.

Some 38% would consider moving immediately, while a further 10% could be tempted by an exemption on stamp duty. That gives a total of 5.7m people currently but the figure could rise to 11.1m by 2036.

McCarthy & Stone chief executive Clive Fenton called on the government to move specialist retirement homes and other accommodation for elderly people higher up the agenda, otherwise there would be a lack of necessary infrastructure and support services.
