The retail sector endured its worst Christmas since the financial crisis in 2008, according to the British Retail Consortium as fragile consumer confidence took its toll on the high street.
Figures from the business organisation and KPMG, the accountant, show that retail sales in the five weeks to December 29 were flat compared with last year. Like-for-like sales fell 0.7%.
Helen Dickinson, of the BRC, said: “Squeezed consumers chose not to splash out this Christmas. The worst December sales performance in ten years means a challenging start to 2019.”
