The British Government’s Ministry of Defence and architect DEGW both won prizes at the MIPIM 97 Awards. The ceremony was held on Saturday night at the Debussy Theatre in Cannes’ Palais des Festivals.
The MODs £250m Procurement Executive HQ at Abbey Wood, Bristol, (pictured above) won the Office Buildings Category.
At the end of 1991, the MOD acquired the site for the 120,000 sq m (1.3m sq ft) scheme. The complex was finally completed in November 1996 when the last of the MOD staff due for relocation from sites around the UK started working there. Architect Percy Thomas Partnership was responsible for masterplanning the scheme.
DEGW designed the mixed-use scheme in Jena, eastern Germany (pictured below), which won first prize in the business centre category and the Jury’s special prize. The project, which has revitalised the former Carl Zeiss works site in Jena, is being developed by IFB Dr Braschel.
Started in 1992, the 200,000 sq m (2.15m sq ft) scheme was Germanys largest ever conversion project, taking four years to complete.
