The Ministry of Defence halted the award of a £200m contract for two Royal Navy ship to the VSEL shipyard, at Barrow, following Scottish Office objections.
There are fears that Kvaerner Govan which has just one ship under construction could be forced to close its yard next spring. The issue is likely to be finally decided by a cabinet committee which meets today.
