MoD saves shipbuilding with £1bn order

Ministers have saved 5,500 shipbuilding jobs with the placing of a £1bn order for three new ships with UK yards.

One destroyer will be assembled at Scotstoun, formerly the Yarrow yard, on the Clyde. Vosper Thornycroft will build the second, possibly in Portsmouth.

The MoD had faced warnings that it could destroy what remains of the UK shipbuilding industry if it went ahead with plans to place the orders abroad.
