Month-long inquiry into Boris’s London Plan begins

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has opened a month-long public inquiry into his draft replacement London Plan.

The Plan sets out mayoral strategy for London’s spatial, physical, environmental and economic development over the next 20 years.

The Examination in Public will test whether the Plan is sound and has been produced on good evidence.

Today’s opening session looks at whether the plan can be realised given the effects of the recession and public spending cuts.

The mayor has said the key elements of the London Plan include a new focus on quality and space standards for housing, with percentage targets for affordable housing scrapped in favour of numerical targets being agreed with every borough.

There will be new support for protecting small shops and promoting small businesses, and new targets and tighter regulations to reduce CO2 emissions from new developments in order to tackle climate change.
