Mortgage approvals for house purchases fell to a six-month low in September amid cooling prices and flagging transaction levels.
According to figures from UK Finance, the industry organisation, approvals for purchases by high street lenders were down 6.7% compared with September last year and were 1.9% lower than the previous month.
Approval numbers are closely followed because they provide an early insight into the level of likely property transactions in the months ahead and, consequently, indicate the health of the housing market.
