More than 10,000 shops shut their doors last year as businesses fought against inflation and economic headwinds.
According to the Centre for Retail Research, 10,494 shops were closed over the year and 119,405 jobs were lost from high streets and other shopping destinations.
This was an improvement on 2022, when 17,151 shops were closed and 151,641 retail jobs lost, in the worst year for store closures since 2008.
The CRR said this year’s figures should be seen as “less bad” rather than “good”, adding that there was not “any real strength in the sector”.
