More time for London Bridge scheme

Network Rail has been given more time to convince London mayor Boris Johnson to back its London Bridge Station redevelopment proposals.

Johnson was due on 1 February to either reject or recommend plans, which include a new ground-level concourse bigger than the pitch at Wembley stadium.

However a Greater London Authority spokesman said: “On 1 February, Southwark council withdrew the referral to allow the GLA further time to negotiate with the applicant, Network Rail.”

Johnson came under pressure to reject the scheme by campaign group Bermondsey Village Action Group, which this week staged a protest outside City Hall.

The group is objecting to the rail firm’s application for listed building consent for the demolition of the train shed roof above the terminus platforms, and conservation area consent for the demolition of the South Eastern Railway building on Tooley Street.

Subject to consent, work on the project is scheduled to get under way in 2013, with completion in 2018.
