MORNING NEWS: BL presses on with new start for Printworks

Good morning. Here’s your daily round up of the latest news and views from EG and a collection of industry-relevant headlines from the nationals.

British Land finally closed the doors on the iconic Printworks yesterday as it launched its new plans for the former printing press as part of its £3.5bn Canada Water masterplan. The site will be transformed into a new mixed-use facility – the Grand Press – providing 158,000 sq ft of grade-A workspace.

Joint head of Canada Water at British Land, Roger Madelin, told EG the scheme would “have the intensity and the urban grittiness of Shoreditch and the green spaces of Richmond. It’s going to be Rich-ditch or Shore-mond”.

The redevelopment forms part of the second phase of the £3.5bn Canada Water masterplan, with practical completion expected in Q3 2026. Phase 1 of the development includes 300,000 sq ft of workspace at Three Deal Porters and the Dock Shed on Deal Porters Way, and 33,000 sq ft of lab space at the Paper Yard’s life sciences quarter.

Elsewhere, Deloitte has nabbed BTR guru Andrew Stanford from Colliers to lead its residential capital investment team. Prior to Colliers, Stanford was head of residential asset management at LaSalle Investment Management and head of the government’s Private Rented Sector Taskforce from 2013-2015.

In his role at Deloitte, Stanford will “provide end-to-end advice in a sector which is set for continuing growth”.

And in the world of retail, Marks & Spencer’s boss has come out all guns blazing in support of London retail. Writing in the Evening Standard, Stuart Machin said London was “on life support” because the government’s tax-free shopping decision threatened the UK capital’s position as a luxury hub.

He labelled London’s high streets a “national embarrassment” and pledged to invest £12.5m in its London stores to try to revive the city.

The biggest news of the day, of course, is which of the UK’s agents delivered the most deals in the first three months of 2023. Find out if you made it to the top of the list in EG’s exclusive Radius rankings.
