Mortgage approvals in July returned to the levels of earlier this year, figures from the Bank of England show.
Lenders approved 68,689 applications for mortgages during the month, up sharply from 65,318 a month earlier.
In value terms, mortgage lending rose to £21.2bn in July, the highest level since 2008.
