Mortgage boom doubles Lloyds’ profit

The boom in mortgage lending helped Lloyds Banking Group to double profit to £2.7bn over the last quarter.

The lender said that growth was driven by strong mortgage lending of £2.7bn between June and September and £15.3bn since the start of the year, giving the bank almost a fifth of the UK mortgage market.

Overall income has risen by 8% to £11.6bn since January. It was up by 20% to £4.1bn in the third quarter, compared with a year ago.

Pretax profit was £2bn, compared with £1bn for the same quarter last year and above analysts’ estimates for £1.3bn. Profit for the first nine months was £5.9bn.
