Mortgage demand proves profitable for Lloyds

A surge in demand for mortgages has pushed Lloyds Banking Group back into profit.

The bank, which is the country’s largest mortgage lender, was boosted by the mini-boom in the housing market over the summer.

It posted pre-tax profits of £1bn for the three months to the end of September, almost twice the £588m that had been expected by analysts.
