The High Court has rejected a bid by local residents to block a new Islamic centre to be built on land owned by Magdalen College, Oxford, after the city council granted planning permission in July for the scheme to go ahead.
David McQuitty, Dr Mark Huckstep, Olivier Bonnici and Stuart Sharp argued that the scheme, complete with 75 ft dome and 108 ft tower, would cover a valuable greenfield site near the river Cherwell. The challengers claimed that in allowing the development local councillors had been in breach of the councils planning policies.
However, Ousley J said that the challenge to the councils decision was unarguable, and refused to grant a judicial review.
Mcquitty and others application for judicial review Queens Bench Division: Administrative Court (Ouseley J) 11 December 2000.
