MP backs Heinz boycott call over HP Sauce factory closure

Heinz’s decision to shut its HP Sauce plant in Aston, Birmingham, has prompted a call for a boycott of the food manufacturer’s products.

Khalid Mahmood, Labour MP for Birmingham Perry Barr, backed calls for the boycott after the announcement the company would switch HP production to the Netherlands.

He said the company had failed to properly consider proposals the local authority, the Department for Trade and Industry and the regional development agency put forward to help save the plant.

Heinz said it had considered building a new factory in the city but had decided it would cost too much.
