MP inquiry launched into regeneration

A parliamentary inquiry into the property industry’s role in creating employment in towns and cities has been launched.

The All Party Urban Development Group (APUDG), a cross-party committee of Lords and MPs, will explore the scope of fiscal incentives for private sector companies involved in regeneration.

The aim is to better understand the role that developers and investors play in providing longlasting jobs for inner city residents.

It will also look at apprenticeships and how regeneration projects can support greater uptake of vocational training.

The group issued a call for written submissions this morning, and will take evidence from property developers, business occupiers, and key public sector players, such as local authorities, RDAs or Sector Skills Councils.

The APUDG was formed to raise the profile and understanding within Parliament of the urban regeneration process and the role that can be played by the private sector, particularly the property investment community.

It is backed by the British Property Federation, which provides secretariat services, and the Centre for Cities think-tank, which conducts independent research for the Group’s inquiry sessions.

Written evidence is due by 13 October 2008, and should be sent to Faiza Shaheen, f.shaheen@centreforcities.org.
