MPS alarmed at giant food retail superstores’ ‘threat’ to rural life

A cross-section of MPs called on the government to be strict in its commitment not to allow more giant food retailing superstore developments because of the effect on rural communities.

Gwyneth Dunwoody, Labour member for Crewe and Nantwich, compared the largest sties to rhododendrons which were attractive to look at but which destroyed every other plant.

James Gray, Conservative member for Wiltshire North, said the march of the supermarket had to be halted if rural town centres, villages and corner shops were to stand any chance of surviving.
