Backbench MPs will try to introduce a law this week forcing the government to create a national register of public buildings containing asbestos.
Detailed surveys are required to list the presence of asbestos in all public buildings, but the results are only held by building managers. They are not required to be submitted for checks or held centrally.
Campaigners want a national register, with more regular checks, and some information made available to the public.
Experts fear that the surveying and renovation work needed to identify and replace the crumbling RAAC panels in schools will be delayed because they are not sure exactly where in their buildings asbestos is present.
