MPs reject £3bn Central Railway tunnel freight link plan

A crossbench alliance of MPs yesterday defeated an order approving Central Railway’s radical scheme to build a privately funded 180-mile, £3bn rail freight link from Rugby in the West Midlands to the Channel tunnel, in Folkstone, Kent. The project was the first private sector scheme to be put forward for parliamentary approval under the 1992 Transport and Works Act.
