M&S blames demise of Oxford Street for recent crime surge

Sacha Berendji, operations director at Marks & Spencer, has said surging crime rates on Oxford Street, W1, have come as the former flagship London shopping street falls into disrepair.

In a letter to The Telegraph, he said the street had once been the “jewel in London’s shopping crown” but was now littered with empty shops and that the incident on the street this week – which led to the arrest of nine people – was another “reminder of how bad things are” for the future of the street.

His comments come after M&S was denied plans to demolish its store at Marble Arch and rebuild it.
