M&S to close six UK stores, but plans 36 new ones

Marks & Spencer said it would close four full-line stores in Portsmouth, Slough, Warrington and Wokingham, as well as two Simply Food stores in Worksop and York.

The company had announced plans last year to close a total of 30 UK stores over a five-year period, and to convert 45 more into food-only outlets. Despite this, 36 new stores are to open over the next six months, of which 34 will be food-only.

Portsmouth city council said the closure plans would have an impact on the proposed redevelopment of the city centre.
