M&S to invest in North East

M&S is to invest £13m in its North East store estate over the next year.

The plans include the refurbishment of its Northumberland Street location in Newcastle. Once complete, it will offer a foodhall and an updated clothing, home and beauty department.

Refurbishment works will begin this month and are due for completion in early 2024.

The works form part of the retailer’s broader £480m investment in stores across the UK, with aims to generate more than 3,400 jobs. It plans to open 20 new stores this year and renew 12 existing stores.

The news comes after the company announced the opening of a new store at the Galleries Retail Park in Washington, relocating from its existing Simply Food shop into a 47,000 sq ft store.

Helen Cowie, M&S regional manager for the North East, said: “Over the years we have undertaken plenty of refurbishments and extensions to make sure the store keeps delivering for local customers and today’s investment – as well as our plans for an exciting new store at Washington Galleries – shows that we’re as committed as ever to offering shoppers in the North East the very best of M&S.”
